Yi features 4 tones, indicated by the syllable's final letter:
- -t: high tone (tonemes 55), examples: bit, biet, bat, buot…
- -x: mid-rising tone (tonemes 34), examples: bix, biex, bax, buox…
- without final consonant: mid tone (tonemes 33), examples: bi, bie, ba, buo…
- -p: low-falling tone (tonemes 21), examples: bip, biep, bap, buop…
