Scots ou Lallans
L'écossais (ou Scots) est une langue germanique apparentée à l'anglais. Il est parlé dans les basses terres de l'Écosse, les Lowlands (littéralement : pays bas). On trouve également le terme de Lallans (variante de lawlands, en anglais lowlands) pour désigner cette langue, employé notamment chez Robert Burns et Robert Louis Stevenson.

Il se distingue du gaélique, langue celtique parlée dans les Highlands (Haute-Écosse).
