The Batak traditional homeland is situated in the highlands and mountains of Northern Sumatra, in Indonesia.

There are several regional varieties, featuring variations in their scripts: Toba, Karo, Simalungun, Mandailing, Pakpak.

Batak Pakpak (Dairi) is spoken in the Pakpak region, northwest of Lake Toba.
