Makasar language is spoken in Southern Celebes (South Sulawesi), Indonesia. It was historically written with the Old Makasar script, also known as Jangang-jangang. This name means "bird-like" because the characters resemble the shapes of birds.
Today, Makasar is mostly written in the Lontara script (also used for Buginese) or the Latin script.
