The Batak traditional homeland is situated in the highlands and mountains of Northern Sumatra, in Indonesia.

There are several regional varieties, featuring variations in their scripts: Toba, Karo, Simalungun, Mandailing, Pakpak.

Batak Toba is spoken in the Lake Toba region, the historical and cultural heartland of the Batak people.
